“Touching things that don’t belong to you,” a deep male voice accused her. “That is your specialty, isn’t it Ivory?”
Ivory dropped her tablet. She dove to pick it up, turning to discover a man wearing a tie as blue as tropical water. His crisp white shirt and charcoal gray suit made a stark contrast against the sweater vest and khakis Ivory had unfastened and tossed into a cardboard box the day its owner gave her a guided tour of the second level supply closet. Smiling lips broadened his smooth, clean-shaven face as his blue-green eyes twinkled. They traced the outline of her hips and belly, igniting a pulsing and a surge of moisture along the curves of her inner thighs.

“Nolan!” Ivory slapped her chest. Regaining her balance, she stood tall as she looked from the imperial throne to the person sitting against its big leather cushion. “What are you doing in here? Where’s Meilani?”
“Enjoying her honeymoon in the Bahamas.” Nolan’s large white fingers gestured to a montage of wedding photos. “At least, that’s where she told me she was headed before she and Julian Lord hopped on her family’s jet, and she left me in charge of the company as interim CEO.”
“CEO?” Observing that her formerly preppy, twenty-second lover had swapped his business cards for the ones in Meilani’s holder, that his Daytona 500 coffee mug was resting next to a titanium encrusted laptop computer, Ivory almost choked up the remnants of her lunch. “You’re joking. Why would Meilani James make you interim CEO? In the middle of a merger. You’re a benefits clerk.”
“Actually, I was promoted to Assistant Director of Human Resources. But that isn’t why I was chosen.” Scratching the back of his dark blonde textured crop, Nolan informed her, “Meilani and I have a history.”
Detecting a bit of insinuation, Ivory tsked. “Don’t even tell me what that means.”
“Why not?” The man claiming to have been crowned king furrowed his silky golden eyebrows. “You and I have a history, too.”
“Ancient history,” Ivory snapped.
“It wasn’t that long ago.” Nolan’s eyes narrowed as they rolled over her neck, collarbone and the rising peaks of her breasts. “You definitely made an impression.”
Ivory’s skin flamed. The fire spread, fueling the desire to remove her burning clothes. “I hope you mean with my writing skills.”
“Absolutely. At least, that’s what I was referring to when I made the statement.” Folding his hands behind his head as he sank into his enormous chair, Nolan said, “I intend to prove myself while I’m in this role, prove to Meilani and everyone else that I deserve a seat at the top. Permanently. To do that, it’s critical I have a strong second in command.”
Realizing what he intended as his irises grated the slit in her pencil skirt, becoming hot and sticky, Ivory wrung her hands. “You’re not serious.”
“You’re perfect for this job, Ivory. I’m confident in your capability, so much so that I fired our current COO this morning.”
Ivory dropped her leather handbag. “You did what?”
“It seems your hour has arrived, Ms. Addington. What do you say?” The slightly younger man kept his eyes on her body, holding her captive with his unrelenting stare as he retrieved a contract from the top drawer of the desk.
“I”—Ivory stumbled backwards as he handed her a pen—“I say you’re out of your mind. And no, ok? No way in hell.”
Nolan’s dimples contracted. “Why not?”
“Why not? For one, I don’t work with men that I…”
“I’m sorry, were you going to finish that sentence? Ah”—Nolan zeroed in on the adjacent closet as he licked his lips—“I believe you were going to say you don’t work with men you’ve fucked shamelessly to obtain information. Isn’t that right, Ms. Addington?”
Ivory’s jaw dropped. Perspiration slickened the most intimate crevices of her skin. “I wouldn’t say that’s an entirely fair statement, considering you were doing the same thing to me.”
Nolan shrugged. “We were on an even playing field, then. Whereas now, I’m holding all the cards.”
“Meaning, what?”
“Meaning”—he sank a basket in the hoop suctioned to one of the filing cabinets—“that if you don’t accept my very generous offer, I’m afraid I’ll have no choice but to expose what you and Amelia Lawson were really doing here last fall.”
The threat hit Ivory like a bucket of ice water. “That’s old news.”
“News I can’t imagine you’d want getting out even now.”
Assuredly not, but she hadn’t been the only one with an agenda. “I could expose you, too.”
“You could”—Nolan scratched a patch of light stubble—“but I doubt many people would put stock in the word of a marketing assistant turned low-level manager, speaking out against the CEO. And of course, when word of your offense gets out, I’ll have no choice but to fire you.”
“Fine”—Ivory lifted her chin—“go ahead. Fire me.”
“Are you sure that’s what you want? You may not have climbed very high on the ladder, but I doubt you’re looking to start from square one. Why would you, when I’m offering you the opportunity of a lifetime?”
Ivory considered that question from every angle. She did up her single-button jacket as she approached Nolan’s temporary workstation. “To be clear, if I was crazy enough to do this, it would be a business relationship. Nothing more.”
“I remember the way you do business, Ms. Addington”, the CEO said as he captured her right hand. “If you’re attempting to issue me an ultimatum”—he isolated her pointer finger, massaged it with his thumbpad—“for which you have no leverage, you’re going to have to make yourself a lot clearer.”
“Meaning”—Ivory shifted to relieve the pressure building underneath her panties—“that you will keep your hands to yourself.”
Blue-green irises deepened a shade in pigment as their owner grated her knuckles. “I can’t imagine that will be a problem. If I recall, when we met, you were the one who came onto me.”
“That’s debatable—”
“I’m not sure what could be debatable about you locking the two of us in closet full of stationery and stripping down to your g string.”
“A mistake that I will not be making again.” Ivory yanked free.
“Well”—Nolan surveyed her silk-laden curves—“I suppose it’s possible you may have grown up a little.”
Steam rose in Ivory’s throat. “Excuse me?”
“But so have I. And I don’t take orders, Ivory. Not from you or from anyone.”
Ivory blinked half a dozen times. She shut her mouth and opened it slowly. “Nolan, I wasn’t—”
“That’s Mr. Grey.” The CEO towered over her. “And if you’re wise enough to accept this offer, kitten, it’s not a negotiation. You work for me, and you complete whatever tasks I require of you. Business is hardly a democracy.”
