Strength of the Independent Writer

I’m not a team-player. In fact, when I see the words ‘team-player’ written anywhere it makes me cringe. I can only vouch for my own life experiences, but typically, when someone says they are looking for a ‘team-player’ they seem to mean someone who doesn’t think outside of the box, who conforms to their superior’s way of thinking or at least, someone who can make it appear as though they agree on a regular basis. This isn’t me.

Though I have at times tried to hide who I am in the hopes of appearing as who I am “supposed to be,” my inner self has a way of coming out. Perhaps it is the writer in me, or perhaps I just believe that people should be honest about the way they feel. But I wear my heart on my sleeve. Or, I suppose, as a writer, I wear my heart on my pen.

Writing is a solitary profession. Though I’ve heard countless times that it doesn’t have to be, I cherish the solitary part of writing, the chance not only to be in my own thoughts but to listen to my own heart and turn my thoughts into ideas. Playing as a child, I often enjoyed playing alone, especially when I played with my dolls because I alone would create the story they told without any influence or suggestion from anyone. Writers need a good editor on their team, but many of us do not write with a co-author, because we enjoy the same thrill I did as a child, the thrill you get from creating a story that is entirely yours.

Inspiration comes from many sources. But it is when I write freely, without guidelines or restrictions, when I am at my most creative.
